AnSWeR is a half-day workshop about the deployment of Semantic Web formalisms and technologies in robotic applications. The workshop aims to create an opportunity to trigger and strengthen the dialogue between the Semantic Web and the Robotics communities. It will allow addressing and debating on problems that have been tackled so far by two communities that worked on overlapping topics.

Robots are slowly spreading outside the industrial and research environment, to approach our everyday life. As this happen, robots will need to expose an increasing capability to deal with different sources of knowledge about the world, to accomplish complex task involving Planning, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and so on. The need for integrating robots with Knowledge Bases to provide them with a basic understanding of semantics has been already noticed by the Robotics community, and is testified by research projects such as KnowRob and Robobrain.

It is therefore natural to think about whether and how the Semantic Web can have a role in this context. In recent years, the Semantic Web community has studied how to model, mine, manage and exploit knowledge from and for the Web, promoting in parallel the adoption of standards for knowledge representation. In this sense, Robotics appears as a key application domain for Semantic Web technologies, whose findings can be applied, adapted and further developed, as also showed by projects such as RoboEarth.

It is therefore important to understand how the Semantic Web community is interfacing with Robotics, and whether it can be actually beneficial. To this end, the aim of this workshop is to promote and strengthen the dialogue between the two communities that are working on such connected topics, in order to find answers to the posed questions (and hopefully to ask new questions). The stimulated debate should then serve as a background in fostering, on one hand, the application of Semantic Web standards and techniques in problems common to Robotics, while on the other, in highlighting Robotics as a fertile application field for the Semantic Web community.

We expect original, high-quality contributions embracing both the general topics of Semantic Web and Robotics. Researchers whose work have reached a certain level of maturity or have already developed impactful applications are invited to submit full papers. Initial work, ongoing challenges, or not yet fully evaluated systems are also welcome, and can be submitted in the form of short papers, position papers and demos. While we aim for AnSWeR to cover the broad range of potential interactions between the Semantic Web and Robotics, authors are encouraged to consider the following set of topics:

  • Robotics application using Semantic Web technologies
  • Semantic methods to support the development of robotic systems
  • Knowledge acquisition in robotic applications
  • Representation and reasoning for Robotics
  • Standardisation of terminology for robotics
  • Automation using ontologies
  • Planning and navigation using semantic data and knowledge
  • Semantic Maps
  • Interlinking local robotic knowledge with information coming from the Web of Data
  • Usability of available Semantic Web resources in Robotics
  • Knowledge sharing and exchange among several robotic platforms or applications
  • Knowledge and perception
  • Entity linking, grounding and anchoring
  • Concrete use cases of working robotic systems exploiting Semantic Web approaches
  • Robotics within the Web of Things
  • Semantics to support Cloud Robotics
  • Future trends at the intersection of Robotics and the Semantic Web

Submissions in all the categories mentioned above (full, short, position, demo papers) will be peer-reviewed by researchers familiar with both scientific communities. Assuming a sufficient number of submissions, accepted contributions will be published as online proceedings courtesy of Moreover, workshop chairs will award one best paper to be published as part of the proceedings of the ESWC 2017 conference.

Submission Instructions

All papers must represent original and unpublished work that is not currently under review. Papers will be evaluated according to their significance, originality, technical content, style, clarity, and relevance to the workshop.

We welcome the following types of contributions:

  • Full papers (up to 10 pages)
  • Short papers, Position papers or Demos (up to 5 pages)

All submissions must be PDF documents written in English and formatted according to LNCS instructions for authors.

Papers are to be submitted through the Easychair Conference Management System. Page limits are inclusive of references and appendices, if any.
